Diplomatic Endeavors: PM Modi's Strategic Meeting with Israeli President Herzog

In a high-profile encounter at the COP28 climate meeting in Dubai, Prime Minister Narendra Modi engaged in crucial discussions with Israeli President Issac Herzog. The focal point of their conversation was the pressing need for the secure delivery of aid in the aftermath of the October 7 Hamas attacks.
Expressing profound condolences for the lives lost in the October 7 attacks, Prime Minister Modi warmly welcomed the recent release of hostages by Hamas. A statement from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) emphasized the significance of addressing the immediate humanitarian needs of the affected population.
This marked Modi's first meeting with President Herzog after the October 7 events, underscoring the gravity of the situation. The sidelines of the COP28 climate meeting provided the backdrop for their discussions, where Modi expressed condolences once again and engaged in a comprehensive dialogue on the ongoing conflict.
The conflict took center stage during Modi's bilateral meeting with UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. Both leaders not only reviewed their extensive bilateral ties but also exchanged views on the Israel-Hamas conflict. Additionally, Modi extended a noteworthy invitation to the UAE President to attend the Vibrant Gujarat Summit in the upcoming month.
Modi and Herzog were part of the distinguished gathering of more than 140 heads of states and governments at the annual climate change conference. Notably, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, originally slated to attend, delegated representation instead, signaling the gravity of the Israel-Palestine issue in global discussions.
The Israel-Palestine issue featured prominently in bilateral discussions, not only with Herzog but also in other diplomatic engagements led by Modi. These discussions highlight the persistent efforts to find viable solutions and foster diplomatic resolutions.
During the meeting with Herzog, Prime Minister Modi reiterated the imperative for the continued and secure delivery of humanitarian aid to the affected population. He emphasized India's steadfast support for a two-state solution and the early, durable resolution of the Israel-Palestine issue through diplomatic dialogue.
President Herzog took the opportunity to congratulate Prime Minister Modi on the success of India's G20 presidency. He also welcomed the launch of the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor, a significant decision announced on the sidelines of the G20 summit in New Delhi in September.
Among other prominent world leaders, Modi engaged in conversations with UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, Turkey President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and Italian Prime Minister Georgia Meloni. Subsequent bilateral meetings included discussions with French Prime Minister Emmanuel Macron, Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu, Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, Uzbekistan President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, and President of the Swiss Confederation Alain Berset, concluding with Modi's departure for New Delhi later in the night.
In a meeting with UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, the Prime Minister delved into matters and concerns of the countries of the Global South. Modi expressed gratitude to Guterres for his support during India's G20 presidency and provided insights into India's ongoing climate actions.
Both leaders exchanged views on the priorities and concerns of the Global South related to climate action, climate finance, technology, and reforms of multilateral governance and financial institutions, including the UN. The UN Secretary-General appreciated India's efforts in sustainable development, climate action, MDB reforms, and disaster management under the G20 Presidency. He welcomed Modi's Green Credit Initiative and affirmed commitment to working with India to build on the achievements of India's Presidency, taking them forward at the UN Summit of the Future in 2024.
